Only few kilometres south of Heraklion, Knossos, the capital of King Minos and the centre of the magnificent Minoan civilization is located. In Heraklion you may wander around the city to see the Venetian buildings and castle, the impressive Cathedral, the fountains, the open street market or just to have lunch. The visit to the town's famous Archaeological Museum, situated in the centre of the city, is a must. Heraklion’ Museum is considered one of the richest in the world with the most important finds of the Minoan era (5000 BC to 395 AD) displayed there.
